In June 2011 50,000 tons of oil and 100,000 gallons of drilling mud were released in to the rich fishing waters of the Bohai Sea off the east coast of China. China’s State Oceanographic Administration has described the incident as, “the most serious marine ecological incident in China.”
The fisherman who regularly caught clams, crab, scallops and other seafood in this area saw their livelihoods destroyed by the pollution. ConocoPhillips, whose work in the area allegedly caused the spills, has agreed to pay the Chinese government hundreds of millions of dollars for the spills, but, so far, has not agreed to pay the individual fishermen anything. The Chinese Courts have also refused to hear cases and provide any relief to the injured fishermen.
Chinese Fishermen Seek Relief in the United States
Since ConocoPhillips is an American company, the injured Chinese fishermen may have the right to recover damages here in the United States. Our Pennsylvania mass action attorneys are proud to fight with our distinguished colleagues from Louisiana and Texas on behalf of the injured fishermen.
For decades, the experienced attorneys of Sacks, Weston & Petrelli have worked to help the injured victims of environmental disasters. We believe that big energy companies should be accountable for the harm they cause individuals and small businesses and we will fight hard to see that justice is done.
